Project Stand Up (PSU) began as a small youth initiative with big dreams. Like many youth-led movements, we started with passion before structure learning along the way what it truly takes to build an organization that lasts. Over time, we’ve grown into a trusted refugee-led organization known for our integrity, accountability, and consistency.
Our growth didn’t happen overnight. We learned by doing creating our first risk assessment, establishing safeguarding procedures, setting up a PSU Board, and developing clear finance and decision-making systems. These weren’t just checkboxes; they became the backbone of how we protect our people, our work, and our community’s trust.
With the partnership of Host International Foundation as our fiscal sponsor and Porticus as one of our earliest funders, we were able to strengthen and expand what we were already doing operating professionally, transparently, and with strong values. Their trust opened doors to new funders and partners who continue to believe in PSU’s youth-led vision.
What defines PSU today is our accountability not just to donors, but to our youth, our communities, and our partners. Everyone who has worked with us can attest to our consistency and honesty. That trust is what has carried us forward more than any funding or title could.
Our journey is proof that youth-led organizations can be both community-rooted and professionally managed. The “secret” is simple but not easy consistency, integrity, and openness to learn.
To aspiring youth-led and refugee-led initiatives: we’ve been where you are. We know the challenges of starting small, of building systems while running programs, of earning trust one project at a time. And we’re open to share what we’ve learned from governance tools to safeguarding templates to help others grow stronger, too.
